How I Work
Research shows that the relationship with your therapist is the single most important factor for growth, change and relief of symptoms. In sessions, I’ll listen intently and collaboratively, ask questions that make you think in expanded ways and help make connections to feelings or conflicting intentions you may not be aware of. I’m focused on helping you to recognize, appreciate and make the greatest use of your strengths and talents so you can feel fully alive, connected and productive.
As we explore and organize your personal narrative together, we can look at things with fresh eyes and you can become freer to make more conscious choices in your path ahead, rather than relying on habitual ways of being and reacting. We all tend to get caught in patterns of behavior we developed for good reasons that are no longer constructive. It is hard to find ways out of these patterns alone. Our work together can give you a space to explore these reflexes and the feelings that go along with them, and work to change those that no longer serve you well. The process can lead to a more vital and fulfilled life and less anxiety, depression and suffering.
I recognize entering therapy is a courageous step, and I my objective is to meet your bravery with an active, empathic, and supportive presence. We will meet as strangers and develop a collaborative bond. The old stereotype of the silent, uninvolved therapist who sits behind a couch occasionally making pronouncements is just that – a stereotype. I am rarely quiet in sessions! We can set up an initial consultation and assess our fit. Feel free to contact me by telephone or text at (914) 924-0793, send me a message through the contact form, or email me at jshimerlcsw@icloud.com.
*Note: due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I am working remotely by telephone and secure video sessions. I am open to accepting patients from wide geographies and continuing remote work going forward once Covid-19 is behind us.
